Reliance’s AGM is underway. Mukesh Ambani has announced the Internet plans that Jio will be offering. The service was earlier rolled out in beta for select smartphones and Reliance LYF devices. It will now be available for everyone. Mukesh Ambani game-changing Jio will force the country's top operators to rethink their tariff. 

Reliance had a phased rollout for its Jio services. Initial availability was restricted to its own employees and those buying their LYF devices. Recently, Reliance Jio was made available to selected smartphones from select device manufacturers. Starting September, Reliance Jio’s 4G service will be available to everyone. It is the ‘free welcome offer’. The newly announced offer gives free data services for four months. The tariff starts at Rs 19 from January 2017. 


With Jio, Reliance only wants to sell data and voice calls are being offered free. Speaking at the Reliance AGM, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said, “Jio is a data-strong network, built for the Internet from the ground up. It will cover 90 per cent of India’s population by March, 2017.”

Reliance Jio, is not only about the free services offered to customers. The bigger picture lies in the tariff plan offered post that free offer. Reliance Jio services start for as cheap as Rs 19 and go all the way up to Rs 4,999. The service is available in both prepaid as well as postpaid offers with postpaid services starting at Rs 499.

First things first, Reliance Jio is selling only data here so both local and std voice calls are free, even when roaming. The local and STD video calls are free too, but user will be charged for data usage. Reliance Jio is also offering unlimited 4G LTE data at night with all plans, but period is 2AM to 5AM and not 11PM to 6AM like other service providers.

Reliance Jio’s basic postpaid service starts at Rs 149 which offers 300MB free 4G LTE data and subscription to Jio apps. The service offers only 100 free SMS per month. However, the service does not have unlimited free 4G data at night and free WiFi data. The service is also available for prepaid users with validity of 28 days. Reliance Jio’s best prepaid plan is the Rs 299 one which offers 21 days validity, 2GB 4G LTE data, 4GB WiFi data, 100 free SMS per day and free subscription to Jio apps.

Reliance Jio’s Rs 499 plan is available is available both in the form of prepaid as well as postpaid option. The service gives 4GB LTE data, unlimited night 4G data, 8GB free WiFi data and 100 free SMS per day. While the postpaid service is a 1-month plan, prepaid plan comes with 28 days validity. For Rs 999, Reliance Jio users will get 10GB LTE data and 20GB free WiFi usage. Further, the plans offer 20GB at Rs 1,499, 35GB at Rs 2,499, 60GB at Rs 3,999. The most expensive plan costing Rs 4,999 offers 75GB free LTE data, plus unlimited free 4G data at night and 150GB free WiFi data. The postpaid plans also incur additional taxes. The top-end postpaid plans come with between 30 and 100 minutes of ISD minutes free.

While Jio is not really offering 1GB for Rs 50, the tariff is still cheaper than what we have on offer from other service providers. Reliance Jio could put an end to voice calls and start an emerging trend for 4G video calls. Reliance Jio's app booking is worth Rs 15,000 for an annual subscription. It will be available free for all active customers till December 31, 2017. Ambani also said that Reliance Jio will offer 300 TV channels, 6,000 movies, 2.8 million songs in 10 languages via its app.
