Paytm has launched Paytm mall, a standalone E-commerce app. For years, Paytm has run its mobile wallet and E-commerce divisions together, and you use the same app to access both sides of the business. However, the company has been planning to separate the two as the wallet becomes a part of its payments bank, and the launch of Paytm Mall shows that this is now happening. Interestingly, Paytm Mall also evokes the name T-Mall, one of China’s biggest E-commerce players, and a part of the Alibaba Group, which is an investor in Paytm.
Paytm Mall has over 1.4 million sellers on board for the platform, across categories like fashion, electronics, consumer durables and home furnishings among others. Also, reassuring quality standards, Paytm claims that only trusted sellers passing strict quality guidelines and qualification criteria will be allowed on the ‘Mall’. All products listed on the mall will also go through Paytm certified warehouse and shipping channels ensuring guaranteed consumer trust.
Commenting on the launch, Saurabh Vashishtha, Vice President Paytm said, “In our journey to become the preferred e-commerce platform for Indians, the launch of the Paytm Mall app is an important step as it connects consumers with trusted sellers. Through Paytm Mall, our aim is to offer consumers the most trusted shopping experience. We have defined quality criteria for sellers and are building strict controls over warehousing and shipping for products sold on Paytm Mall. Consumers would continue to get the largest assortment of domestic and international products through Paytm Bazaar, which will also be featured on the new app.”

The Paytm Mall app itself looks and functions a lot like the main Paytm app - tap the mall button on the latter's navigation pane, and the experience seems largely identical. The Paytm Mall is currently available on Android and Web. It lists over 68 million products sold by 1.4 lakh sellers spread over 1000 cities and towns across the country. The iOS app is expected soon. At this point, it would only be a confirmation of the separation if the entire e-commerce section is removed from the main app, with Paytm recently crossing 200 Million Wallet users. It would, quite literally, pay to focus on transactions separately, especially with the upcoming payments bank from Paytm.
